ZoomText making computer run slow? (self.Blind)
submitted by coffee4jesus16
I downloaded the trial version of ZoomText and it is making my computer run incredibly slow. Is this normal or just my computer?

It requires a lot of resources to run. If you have an older computer (or a laptop with a crappy integrated video card) there can be an issue. On a good computer you will mostly be fine.

I was using zoomtext for about 15 years but moved away from it after Microsoft introduced fullscreen magnififers in their operating systems.
I loved the feature set but as an it-professional Zoomtext is unusable. It lacks proper support for most applications I need and last time I installed a trial it refused to run with Google Chrome.
Combined with multiple crashes and serious performance problems I had to uninstall it within a day or two.
If all you need to do is go on the Internet and type a word document its probably fine. But that is not how an accasability tool should work in my mind. It should allow me to do my work using the tools I need. Not force me down a narrow path.
And its not just a question about having enough "horsepower". I have a highend desktop computer with quadcore cpu, 32 gbyte of memory, dedicated graphics and an ssd drive. Zoomtext just brought that machine to a standstill.
I have been moving partially to a mac and it is the exact same story there. Zoomtext runs very poorly on my macbook pro 15 inch.
Sorry for the rant, but I really find the situation frustring. I whish Apple and Microsoft would put a little more effort into their accesability tools and, once and for all, put aisquad out of business.

This echoes my experience. I've not used ZT since Windows started shipping with an okay full-screen magnifier, but when I used ZT, I had many issues. One thing related to performance was that ZT restricted all programs to run on one and only one CPU core on the computer (I hope this is not the case today). Since I'm a software engineer, I was trying to use a lot of software which ZT simply didn't cooperate with. For this situation, the built-in magnifier worked much better. Unfortunately, it lacks many features that ZT has...

So, ZT slowing down the computer unfortunately doesn't surprise me.

I remember that cpu core isue. And how long it took to get 64 bit/new os support. So frustrating.

And it is such a shame. I am a software engineer myself and features like the dual-monitor support in zoomtext (ability to run one monitor with, and one without, magnififaction) would make my life so much easier.

It makes mine slower as well, and drains the battery, but it's worth it
