Looking for resources/advice for ways I can help my mom who is undergoing vision loss (self.Blind)
submitted by jbaker232
Due to a possible complication with spine surgery, my mom has been experiencing rapid vision loss. This has developed within the last year. My dad is recently retired and is home with her at all times. I am also concerned about him as this is a strain on him. Has anyone experienced anything like this with a loved one? Any guidance you could provide? Gift ideas for the holidays? Thanks.

http://www.zoomax.co/low-vision-information/Adjusting-to-Vision-Loss.html here is a mother saying guilt is the hardest thing to handle: "I never want him (her son) to feel like he has to take care of me. I never want anyone to feel or think that. I am not someone else's responsibility."

Might help you a little. http://www.zoomax.co/low-vision-information/Gifts-for-the-Visually-Impaired.html gift ideas for the visually impaired.

Talk to your state agency for vision rehabilitation, to see what they suggest. There isn't enough information to tell how permanent or how much vision she has lost, and they would be able to give you more information. They may also be able to do some training to help your mother acclimatize to vision loss (and your father on the best ways to assist).

I haven't had this with a family member, but I've had this happen to a number of clients (complications from a medical procedure, not always related to vision, that causes vision loss). There are many, many factors, and vision loss can be relatively minor to incredibly severe. Your mother's medical team should be able to give you more information for you to do some research.

For gift ideas, you know your mother better than we do. Don't focus on her vision loss, she isn't just a pair of eyeballs. Think about what she likes, and how it can be adapted. If she has only some vision loss, and she likes cards, you can get large print cards. Likes to read? Maybe a subscription to Audible or another audio book service. One thing that people with severe vision loss usually have problems with is telling time. A talking watch could be useful for that.

To tag on with this- how is she going Xmas shopping for your dad? Also your dad might like a day 'off' where he can chill at home without stress too.

Call her up, offer a shopping trip, make sure to help get everything wrapped and tagged well.

Then if you are getting her a talking watch or audible service make sure to be clear that help setting up is part of the gift.
