Has Anyone Here Watched The OA on Netflix Who'd Care to Comment on The Show's portrayal of Blindness? *no spoilers*(self.Blind)

I'm a few episodes deep and the main character is blind for a time. In my opinion the show does a good job of portraying blindness at times, such as showing the main character using a screenreader. It's about a 10-second clip but I think stuff like that goes a long way in showing sighted folks and eliminating that question of "How do you use a computer?" Some other things I'm not sure about. For instance, the main character will often not be sure of someone's intentions until she touches their face, and then she's convinced of their noble or wicked intent. I don't do that but I don't know many blind people so maybe I'm the one that's weird?
Anyway, I invite you all to watch the show. It's not really about blindness at all, just kind of an underlying issue.

I haven't watched it yet. Though I will at some point! I intend to watch everything with audio description that Netflix offers, just to show support for AD on Netflix, if nothing else. But I've only got about 2 hours of TV time a day, so...it takes a while. :-) Honestly, that really says a lot of good things about Netflix: a blind person can watch for 2 hours a day, and find himself way way behind on audio described content. You can't say that about any other service in the world.

Also, unrelated kind of but audio description makes it a joy to watch those Daredevil fight scenes over and over again.

Try family guy! Some is AD and the fights between peter and the chicken sound ridiculous.

Is the AD on Netflix? I don't seem to recall it being on there but I know they keep adding things all the time.

Yep, only the newer seasons are AD though.

Yeah I agree. I'm incredibly grateful because Netflix shows are really in vogue right now and it's a delight to be able to discuss it fully with sighted friends and not be at a disadvantage.

I really enjoyed that show; I would highly suggest finishing it. I thought it was interesting that they chose to make her blindness just a facet of her character rather than some inspiration porn like most writers tend to do. And I love that they showed her doing things sighted people think are only their domain, like when she was cutting food with the knife and digging in the fridge to find what she wanted. They touch on it a little more towards the end of the season, with her family and stuff. I also liked that she wasn't portrayed as that "blind seer/prophet" trope that lots of shows and movies love to use.

I just lurk because I'm curious about facets of blindness and I have a question. How do you watch it as a blind person? Does that show have audio desciption or do you just listen?

Yeah this show has audio description. Netflix has made it a priority to include audio description with all of its releases going forward, which I think is a policy that started when the first season of Daredevil was released. They're the only network I'm aware of that's doing this.

It is so cool that they do this!

It has audio description. All netflix original content does.
