YSK if you lost your driver's license after becoming visually impaired it will show up as "suspended/Revoked" on a background check and it may prevent you from getting hired.(self.Blind)

I learned this the hard way after having an offer recinded during the background check portion (of a very high paying but sensitive job) with no further contact or explanation.
Luckily during the background check on the next job I was offered the background check company emailed me their report - where I saw I was flagged as a high risk due to my driver's license being "revoked/suspended" (shows up the same as someone who lost it do to multiple DUI's or criminal reasons) - and I was able to call my future employer and explain the situation.
I'm trying to figure out who in government I can contact to look into this - it seems like it could be a form of potential discrimination as well as a HIPPA violation if you're forced to explain a medical condition to a future employer.

Oh it's 100% discriminatory. Even unintentionally, it still is. It violates HIPPA and the ADA, but of course most employers don't really care and neither does the government. (Yes I'm a little bitter: I have been turned down form more jobs than I can count for my disabilities, even though I'm perfectly capable of doing the job, and usually better than most people my age.)

That's why I don't like to tell employers. Because my vision loss is visual field loss and I'm pretty adapted by now most people won't notice during an interview, but the second potential employers know they start second guessing your abilities...

It probably depends on the state/province/country. Here in Saskatchewan it shows up as "Non-renewed - Medical Reasons".

This is how I think it should be everywhere.

"revoked/suspended" WOW

Can the doctor actually take them away? It seems like there should be a system in place for this but I would not be surprised at all if there weren't.
LibraryGeek3 points6y ago
Yeah they can, actually they are supposed to. I went to get my ID instead of my licence due to my vision changes. For the hell of it, I tried the test and got the expected no go. The clerk was surprised the doctor had not reported my licence to be removed.
I think that there should be a different notation -- but how do they do that without HIPAA violations? If we have a medical revocation indicator, does that violate HIPAA? I think if I *voluntarily* surrender my licence I should have the option to mark it as such. It bothers me that I may be marked the same as someone irresponsible just because I'm not able to drive anymore.

This sounds horrible. Hopefully, driver less cars will work out.

Did you voluntarily give it up or was it taken away by a doctor? I ask this because I voluntarily gave mine up.
jomamma2 [OP]1 points6y ago
It was taken, the doctor fills out a form and sends it to the DMV.

I gave mine up voluntarily when I was 38. The last time i drove was when I was 22. I went in to the DMV up to the receptionist with my white cane in plain sight in front of me and with a straight face told her i wanted to renew my license. The confusion that came across her face was priceless.

Useful info. I imagine how this is reported would depend on the jurisdiction but it seems to be worth looking into.

Yeah at least for CA DMV

How would this translate to me? I had a license in Europe but never in US. In US I've got my fancy talking books certification so rather have the access to books than drivers license when I don't really legally see the road.

I try not to tell until absolutely necessary. Like, after being hired if at all possible. My last job though, after asking for an accommodation, I was told to call in sick if I needed it on a day I'm scheduled...even though I can never call in sick because I have to find someone on my own to cover my shift. (And I need my accommodation every day.) So I haven't worked in about 2 months because I know I won't be accommodated, despite doctor's letters stating my need.

Does anyone know how you can find out how your licence is listed?
