What are good ways to learn braille? (self.Blind)
submitted by Crazy_ManMan
I have wanted to learn to read and (if possible?) write in braille some how, but I am not sure really where to start. I have seen a book titled "braille for the sighted" but it appeared to be more directed at children, so I am thinking there may be more efficient teaching tools for adults.

It depends on what you are learning braille for. Learning it to sight-read, to tactile read, or to be a transcriber.

If you onlyt want to learn to sight-read braille, that book is sufficient. You realistically only need to learn the 26 characters, and about a dozen symbols for the basics. For tactile reading, you would likely need an ILS instructor to teach you. For the textbooks we have, the first volume doesn't even have braille, it has pre-braille to learn how to utilize your sensations correctly.

To be a braille transcriber, requires significantly more training.

I was hoping for both sight reading and tactile reading. It looks like I will need to do more research before I can learn it then. Thank you for the info!

No problem. You don't even need the book, there are lots of free websites that can teach it to you as well. The book just also gives a tactile option (a very flat one, if I recall correctly).

Yes, I was hoping to have physical thing to work with as well. It would be cool read in the dark, plus I was thinking of trying to design some sort of blind maze with clues written in braille.

Good question, I'm not sure. I know that tvi (teachers for the visually impaired) can teach braille, my son has a tvi who would help if needed (he's too young right now and may not need braille). I hope you find a good answer!
