Jury duty? (self.Blind)
submitted by snow671
Does anyone here have experience with jury duty? I received my notice last week and have to call in three weeks to find out if I'm needed. I doubt I'll be allowed to serve but I think the experience would be amazing.

I came up for jury duty once, when I called to tell them that I was blind I was told that I was excused because they could not make accommodations for a blind person

During selection, the prosecutor had to decide whether or not it would be a disadvantage when it came to the visual evidence. In the end, he decided audible descriptions of the evidence would do. An elderly juror who identified as 'hard of hearing' was provided with an amplification headset, which kept the judge on his toes. The judge had to remember to switch his mic off/on when lawyers approached the bench as the headset picked up everything. You could call in advance to find out if your location can accommodate jurors with disabilities. It was a rewarding experience.

Thank you for your reply. I posted the question in Legal Advice and most responses said it depends on the case. But I will ask if and how they accommodate blind jurors when I call.

I was able to get my vitriol retinal surgeon who is managing my post blindness care to draft a letter permanently excusing me from jury duty and had them fax it off to the court. It was an interesting experience with vision, but I honestly and personally cannot fathom going through the whole process while blind.

Thank you for your response. Is it really that bad? I've never experienced jury duty.

The parent mentioned $1. Many people, including non-native speakers, may be unfamiliar with this word. **Here is the definition**^\(In ^beta, ^be ^kind):

In general, the name given to the time a person serves on a jury. In many countries, jury duty is a privilege and a responsibility shared by all eligible citizens. There are few exemptions from jury duty: doctors, police officers, students, and even judges are eligible to serve as jurors. [$1]

I was on a jury 3 1/2 years ago and it was definitely an amazing experience, I don't know if they have provisions for visually impaired people but if you're really interested in doing it it's possible that they can find you a trial where it won't be an issue.

Thank you for your reply. I will be sure to ask when I call about my summons.

If they find a way to accommodate you please post back about your experience if you get a chance.

I filled out the online form last Tuesday and it said I'm not needed. I called Jury Services the following day and they seemed confused by my question and redirected my call. In the end, I never got an answer regarding accessibility, I'm sorry.

I do appreciate you asking the question, it was very kind of you to remember.
