Working while on ssdi? (self.Blind)
submitted by JusBis
I would like to return to work (something part time to feel productive). I've been trying to understand how work with ssdi goes but there is differ t rules for the blind. Can anyone that works with ssdi help me understand? I so afraid to lose my insurance for a part time job and the need to feel useful. Also do I just call SSA and tell them I want to work? Any help would be amazing, I'm stressing out about how to do this and not fully understanding the .gov website because of different rules for the blind. Thank you

My friend is legally blind and collects ssdi, he is able to work part time and continue to collect benefits for him and his son. I know that they're VERY strict on the amount of hours that he can work, to the point where sometimes he needs to call out to make sure he isn't working too many hours. I think your best bet would probably be to call and ask about it. Just tell them what you said here.

Alternatively, if you're just looking to feel productive and its not a monetary issue, have you considered volunteering somewhere? I know animal shelters, nursing homes, and hospitals are almost always looking for volunteers to help out.

Check out this website. Choose the state you live in, and it will give you a really good in-depth rundown of what to expect when balancing disability benefits with work. I use this to work out exactly how much I can make per month at my current job without interfering with what I get in disability benefits.
