Must have IOS apps for blind 15 year old (self.Blind)
submitted by okay-thislooksbad
Hi all,
I'm a high school teacher of a legally blind student in a mainstream classroom. I have taught this student for four years now (she also has a brain injury). I've taught myself contracted Braille, and have become one of the primary advisors in the way her education is run at the school. She completes an altered curriculum due to her brain injury, and a huge part of that at the moment is developing her independence. Recently I organised for her to have an ipad included in her funding. Her mother has zero technology skills, so I've been teaching myself to use VoiceOver and the braille function on the ipad so that I can pass these skills on.

What I would love to know is, what apps are must haves for a student of this age? She loves Candy Crush at the moment so far as games are concerned, and a lot of her interests are quite immature (Frozen is her favourite movie in the world, and she loves unicorns) but I'd love some that could help her with every day activities that I might not know about. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Doesn't your district provide vision services to students with visual impairments? The iPad is fully accessible but not all apps work with the accessibility technology so it's best to just download them and try out whatever apps you're interested in.

They do, but her ISTV is not particularly techie, (she was using a Perkins in my classroom up until last year when I pushed for a Braillenote). Unfortunately, as a result of the brain injury, she finds the Brailling still to be incredibly challenging (she reads at 10 wpm and writes at 14wpm) so I'm trying to boost her access to tools that she's more likely to use independently once she leaves school. I will continue having a play. Thanks.

Thank you. What a lovely thing to say. You can't help them all, but it's great when you can help a few, isn't it? :)

TapTapSee and BeMyEyes

I had a go with taptapsee and it looks good. Thanks a lot! I will download BeMyEyes this morning. The stuff I've read on Blindsquare also looks great, so I'm going to try and get the school to pay for that one. Thanks for your advice!

Just got it. It's fantastic. We're currently setting up our classrooms in her places. Technology is amazing.

frozen is pretty good, have you seen it?

I have. I like it, but prefer Tangled. I think I poorly explained myself with the immaturity issue. My love of a Tangled is different to a five year old's appreciation for it. Hers is identical. We've just hit the age where jokes are hilarious, but we haven't quite worked out how to tell them properly. I like it, she's lovely, but my commentary on it was kind of to avoid recommendations of apps that had too many complex instructions, and to encourage apps that work with primary age kids. I've just found a great app that runs through scenarios for emergency phone calls that is aimed at 4-8 year olds and it's exactly on the money. She loves it.

I'm a 29-year-old who loves frozen and Unicorns, for what it's worth. Just saying.

As for apps, I'm Surprised nobody has mentioned VoiceDream Reader. If she has access to bookshare, it's the easiest way to read books on the iPhone. She might also find VoiceDream Writer useful, as it can help with writing on the iPhone. I don't use that myself though, so can't say much about it. Wordweb is another good app, providing better dictionaries than the one built into IOS. For chemistry, I hear really good things about $1, though once again, I have no use for it myself. Also, I know Sky Safari 3 was fully accessible. However, I'm not sure about the latest version.
