Any New Yorkers? (self.Blind)
submitted by SupermarketSweep
For the record, I am legally blind with congenital achromatopsia. Visual acuity is about 20/200.

I am moving from suburban New England to NYC soon, and I'm finding it really overwhelming.

I know there are more opportunities for transportation, jobs, services, etc, but I'm having a hard time trying to convince myself I will figure it all out.

Anyone else living or have lived in New York? Any advice?

Access-a-ride service gets really spotty during inclement weather. Oh... And you'll get used to the smell, eventually.

Haha, thanks.

I'm legally blind, and I've been living in NYC for about two years now.

NYC's transit options have been liberating for me. Having lived in Boston, DC, and small towns, this is the first place where I've felt like not driving is a way of life.

How hard was it for you to get used to transit options there?

I learned my everyday commute and routes important to my life quickly. I lived in East Harlem and used the 4/5/6.

However, the transit system is so sprawling that I don't even fully know all the options now. Trips on subway lines I don't use often can be a little stressful when the conductor isn't announcing stations and I happen to be unable to see the maps in a subway car or labels in a station. Planning/budgeting extra travel time generally makes that manageable though.

Yeah, I have a (sighted) friend who lives there, and he said it's really about learning your usual routes.

Thanks for the help!
