Uber finally came is there anything that I need to know. (self.Blind)
submitted by TurtleKnife
As the title says Uber recently came to my town and was wondering if there is anything that I need to know before I sing up. Any personal experiences with Uber would nice too.

I was an Uber driver for a year. I had a few blind regulars. Call the Uber driver after you order the ride and let them know that you are blind and where you will be. The app will tell you when they will be there so be at the door or outside when they get there. If you need assistance, let them know. Uber drivers are pretty impatient because time is money but they don't get paid enough to wait long. If you are ever treated badly or cancelled on after you tell them you are blind, be sure to let Uber know. They are trying to be more sensitive to disabilities, but that isn't communicated well to drivers. Let me know if you have other questions.

Hopefully Lyft comes to your area too so you don't have to use Uber. They are an awful company and don't deserve any support.

Lyft has also came to my area. From what I have heard about Lyft is a sketchy car sharing service. What is so bad about Uber?

It is definitely the other way around. Uber doesn't have nearly as strict and onboarding policy when it comes to hiring new drivers, and there have been many more unsafe incidents involving Uber drivers than with Lyft. Uber still has problems with drivers not taking guide dogs, and Lyft has definitely quelled that. As a company, Uber is Morley defunct as they do not treat the drivers well, most of the passengers are very rude when it comes to shared rides, they don't follow the law or rules wherever they end up spreading, they are politically backwards, and have come out as a tremendously sexist company culture in recent news. The whole company is just bad news all around.

I will say that I do work for Lyft as a contractor, making sure the app and features work for the blind and visually impaired, but bias aside, I had those feelings about Uber long before I was hired to work at Lyft. It may be different in other parts of the country, but over here in San Francisco, Uber is terrible.

That is interesting, I've had experience with both, while I'm not visually impaired I thought this might be some what helpful.

I was in the Atlanta/Buckhead area of GA and during DragonCon and had to take many Uber rides. All of the Uber drivers were very professional and got us from point a to point b with no concern. Lyft on the other hand, the driver refused to take the highway which caused our ride to be an extra 30 minutes at least and had on some comedy Pandora station. While I did not care about the station or it content or what the driver was saying (cursing and the like) it seemed very unprofessional to me in comparison to Uber.

Could have just lucked out on those particular drivers tbh

Also, if you use a guide dog, it may be best to include that information when you first book. You dojn't technically have to, but it can save some hassle later on if the driver refuses to take the guide dog (legally they are suppose to, but that doesn't mean it doesn't cause a problem for you if they refuse).
