A serious question about a not-so-serious topic (self.Blind)
submitted by roguetroll
Hello friendos, as I was reading an AskReddit question on a certain topic and made a dumb joke, I suddenly started wondering about something.

I'm an abuser of "text-based smilies", that basically make up smilies out of a bunch of symbols, and now I can't help but think... What happens if I write one, and a blind person's software stumbles upon it.

Does it just read the symbols as it encounters them? Does it just completely ignore it?

I'll leave one below, in case you need a reference. The dude's called Lennie and he's made up out of a bunch of weird symbols, most of which I can't even find on my keyboard.

Here he is: ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

My current setup reads it as "left paren symbol 3 6 1 degrees symbol 3 5 c turned glottal stop symbol 3 6 1 degrees right paren".

Edit: though an update to $1 addon could fix it. Got a two or three word description that should be read for that emoticon?

It's a face. The characters make up the appearance of eyes, eyebrows, a nose and mouth, as well as brackets making up the side of the head. It's front-facing, with a slight smile or 'smirk' and the eyes seem wide open, as if to suggest that the person has just perked up to something someone has said. It is often used as a response when someone suggests something as an innuendo, either intentionally or not.

I know it's more than a 3 word answer, but I hope it helps.

Thank you, I was scratching my head trying to think of a way how to explain him.

I'm not as good with words as I thought I was... :(

Depends on the screen reader and the settings. Some recognize common emoticons automatically. Most at least read the punctuation so the user could look it up if curious.
