Touch the top of the world bu erik weihenmayer (self.Blind)
submitted by BaginaJon
Hey all,

I'm a teacher of the blind and visually impaired and have a 5th grade almost in 6th grade student who is a prolific reader and has expressed some growing interest in adventure stories, but is also starting to realize more and more how she "can't" do some of the things her sighted peer cans.

Has anybody read Touch the Top of the World by Erik Weihenmayer? I think the premise is perfect for her, but I want to make sure it's appropriate for a 6th grade girl to read before I get it.

Thank you!

Also, if you know of any other book recommendations...

I remember _Stand in the Wind_ by Jean Little being really good at that age, and dealing with some of those themes. Jean Little herself is blind, so that might also be inspiring. Her biography is also good, for somewhat older readers.

At that age, I remember I was enjoying Gordon Korman's books for older readers, especially _Don't Care High_, _No Coins, Please_, and _A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag_. However, these are targeted more at Junior High boys. But if she doesn't mind books with boys as the main characters, they should be fine. There's nothing dealing even remotely with romantic or similar feelings.

In grade 6, I was just starting to grow out of Daniel Pinkwater's books for older readers. But I was still enjoying _The Snarkout Boys and the Avocado of Death_, and _Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars_. These are just as strange as the titles suggest.
