Blind persons, when you get a new home do you fully map it out by touching every surface in it? (self.Blind)
submitted by sharp-string
When you move in to a new home there are rooms, doors, appliances, furniture, pipes, windows, stairs, closets and cupboards - do you map out every nook and cranny in detail to build a 3d model in your mind and how would you do it to build the model accurately and keep it accurate? For sighted people the 3d model would be re-confirmed every time their cone of vision came across those surfaces.

I don't really feel every surface unless I'm cleaning. Maybe I'm weird. I did check the new bathroom for high gloss paint because I don't want any mold.

I don't have a picture in my mind. It's like getting up and going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Maybe you feel around for the door for the first time but eventually you've done the steps so many times that you no longer think about it.

About an hour after typing that reply I accidentally slammed my hip into my desk and dropped my dinner.

That is unfortunate news. I heard you dropped your peanut butter bread and iced coffee. Don't do it again.

Nope. I just learn it by muscle memory. Plus, once all my stuff gets moved in, the familiar chairs/tables/other objects help.

I have a very hard time learning the layout of unfamiliar places. Fortunately I got to know all the places that I currently need to navigate when I had sight, so I have a mental image of them.
