Could you help me with to find selling points for accessibility in our product? (self.Blind)
submitted by hpaul
Hi,

My team is developing a checkout service for online stores. An identified demography of our clients are elderly (and thus some of them have degraded eyesight), but I'm sure there are visually impaired that wouldn't hate if our checkout service would help them do their shopping online as much as possible.

So, basically, I would like to do an accessibility audit on our service, and I don't know how to even start building my case, so that the business believes it's worth their while. I would appreciate your help as much as possible.

Does anyone here have any resources they can point me towards? I'm interested in basically anything and everything: Statistics on various visual impairments, how they affect the daily (online) life, how to properly conduct an online accessibility audit, which standards to abide by, common pitfalls and low hanging fruits, what kind of accessibility devices/methods are popular. Heck, if someone can give me a return-on-investment formula, I'd be set. But basically anything is helpful for me.

Note: I'm not expecting anyone to do this so-called sales pitch for me, but I do appreciate someone pointing towards the right direction.

What country are you in? In the US and other places, accessibility is the law. Retailers who lost in court include Amazon and Target. So if your service isn't accessible, many stores may be unable to use your product at all because of local laws.

If you're interested, here's a list of related court cases:

We are operating in several European countries, but Finland and northern Europe is the main concern. Legality is not an issue as far as I know.

The most useful argument for me would relate directly (or indirectly) to customer happiness, revenue. And, well, if there is some laws-in-the-making, that would be useful as well.
