How to make life easier for my SO who is blind in one eye? (self.Blind)
submitted by greenearcorn
Hello everyone!

I'm sorry if this is not the correct subreddit to use

I was hoping for some advice on how I can be more considerate to my new SO who is blind in one eye

I read once about a girl who sits on the seeing eye side of her boyfriend when they go to the movies, so he doesn't have to turn his whole head to talk to her. Which I thought was so smart!

It inspired me to ask for more advice like this.

Cheers & Thank you!

From my understanding-- treat your SO like they're normal while making small adjustments like the one you mentioned.

For my mom who is legally blind, I know some things that drive her nuts are:

When I move things from where she expects them to be because she can't find them

When we are at home or a restaurant and she doesn't see the wine or water glass and she knocks it over she gets angry. So I try to remember when water is put down to ask her if I can show her where her water glass is. Then I kindly guide her hand to the glass.

At a restaurant I try to call ahead when making a reservation and request a table with good lighting to optimize shadows-- this helps her a bit (obviously this depends on level of vision)

Also when picking restaurants we prefer places that are quieter if possible since the she can't see faces/read lips so hearing is important.

I bought her the Amazon echo which she loves because she can listen to music and audiobooks and ask what time it is, weather, set an alarm/timer etc.

Hope this helps!!

I'm blind on one eye as well, so I can add a few more tips to the list:

When you explain directions, don't point your finger saying "over here/there, because we have no clue where that is. Say things like: "on the right/left etc"

When passing objects, make sure you put it right in the hands instead of having your SO reaching out.

As for moving stuff around, it's fine, but make sure you show the new place you put it.

That's all I can think of for now. Hope this helps. :)

Just ask- ask whether it's okay to ask and ask in situations you're not sure. Situations can change.

For example, when going out to eat, my wife will ask where I want to sit; she usually has an idea (I usually sit with my bad side against the wall), but may change if there's a bad glare I'd be staring into or something.

Similarly, I usually prefer people walking on my good side and a few friends tend to move there automatically. However, again, when out with my wife and kids, it may change if I'm taking my older son's hand (I'll walk behind her instead and have him on my good side) vs. carrying my younger son.

If I'm meeting someone new (like when I started a new job), I'll generally let people know "this is my good side" as I shift to where it's comfortable for me.

As far as depth perception, it's usually not a huge issue unless you're the type that tosses small objects (car keys, pens, etc). Sometimes in a new area, asking if help is needed is fine, but if it's a grocery sore I've been to 100 times, I can figure out the curb and not have it be an issue.

It depends on how much remaining vision that she has.

One common issue that comes up with total loss in one eye is lack of depth perception. They may find they trip on curbs more than normal.

Hi! This is the right sub to post. :-) Sorry it took so long for me to approve your post. I can't offer you any advice, as I'm completely blind, but I can at least welcome you to /r/blind. :-)
