Instant messenger/text app that works well for legally blind folks.(self.Blind)
submitted by angelcake
My partner is low vision bordering on legally blind. We have used the app LINE in the past because he could make the text big enough to read. That is no longer the case. Since we don't live together we communicate by text a lot so it would be good to have something that is easier for him to use. He's on android I'm on Apple so it would need to work on both platforms.
Yes I know I could Google this but I would rather hear from people on Reddit who have found a solution.

He should look into Talkback on Android. Windows phone is a terrible idea. It's a dead platform with limited accessibility in general compared to iOS and Android.

I don't know of any mobile ones but Miranda NG is the best solution on windows.

I'll mention that, he is a Windows guy. Thank you.

Perhaps instead of an app, he should look into accessibility features on his phone. Has he tried using the zoom or color/contrast modification features? I use an android tablet for school, and to activate zoom i just triple tap the screen with one finger. I'm nit sure of any apps though

I'm also a huge fan of Android's triple-tap magnification. Check out the Display Size feature added in Android Nougat, which helps to increase the size of things separate from magnification.

I would think that he has tried out all of the accessibility options. One of the problems he has found is that from version to version in android quite often the location of things changes and it's a struggle to find them in order to take advantage of them

Oh dang. That's a bummer. Best of luck to him

Thanks. He's an awesome guy.

Has he thought of trying a Windows phone?
I have one and the accessibility options are great. Adjustable text size, contrast, option to have phone read out texts or take text dictation by voice.
I bought mine when I had my sight loss a couple of years ago and have found it to be pretty good. It also has nice colourful chunky icons that can be customised to be quite large making it even easier to use.
I don't like Win 8/10 on desktops, but it's a good mobile OS that is very useable for the visually impaired.

I have heard a lot of good things about the windows phone but apparently they are no longer supporting it, at least based upon what I've read recently. Given all the security issues out there today it's probably not a wise choice to buy a new phone that's not going to have any support.
It's sad because I think the windows phone is very much like BlackBerry was, it's a really good product but there is no longer room in the market for it.

It's Win8 that isn't being updated, but Win10 is still being updated and there are regular insider updates (sort of like a beta program).
As long as the phone is Win10 compatible you should be fine.
r/rwindowsphone would be able to give you better info.
Also, one of the advantages of using an OS that's in the minority - virus/malware writers don't bother because the userbase is too small to be worth the hassle. :)

Very true about the viruses. I'll see what he has to say, he just bought a new Asus phone a few months ago so I doubt that he's going to buy another one but who knows. He mostly uses either an android tablet or Windows tablet at home, the phone is mostly for when he's out of the house and needs to reach somebody in a pinch.
