How can we help our friend who just suddenly lost sight (self.Blind)
submitted by mdisred2
Our friend is in his eighties. He has been sick with COPD. He has no family here and he lives in one room. He just suddenly lost his sight three days ago. He went to great eye care hospital. One eye can't be helped. He is waiting to see if the other eye that was treated will see. He is sitting in his room. He has eaten today. We will gladly help with food, though he lives forty miles from us. We feel so sorry. I've looked at Lighthouse for the Blind site and Miami Dade County site but I don't see much. He is ill, can't breathe and now can't see. All suggestions are welcome. We are worried about immediate physical survival for him. Please help. We are in Florida. Our friend has Medicare and he went to Bascom Palmer Eye Institute for his treatment. Thank you.

If someone has just lost their vision, they are often scared and disoriented. They may be going through the 5 stages of grief. Depending on their state of mind, they may not be open to immediate rehabilitation work.

For now, the best thing is to support him socially, and assure him that you guys would be there. Something else that may be useful is a talking watch, the loss of sight often throws off their sense of time (think of how often you check the time during the day).

Wait until the doctors have a better idea of how his other eye would fare. If he still has significant loss, then talk to Lighthouse and other agencies that can do some rehab work with him. I would suggest AGAINST bringing up the white cane currently, he may not be ready (I had someone who wasn't ready throw a white cane at my head before).
