If someone has just lost their vision, they are often scared and disoriented. They may be going through the 5 stages of grief. Depending on their state of mind, they may not be open to immediate rehabilitation work.
For now, the best thing is to support him socially, and assure him that you guys would be there. Something else that may be useful is a talking watch, the loss of sight often throws off their sense of time (think of how often you check the time during the day).
Wait until the doctors have a better idea of how his other eye would fare. If he still has significant loss, then talk to Lighthouse and other agencies that can do some rehab work with him. I would suggest AGAINST bringing up the white cane currently, he may not be ready (I had someone who wasn't ready throw a white cane at my head before).
