Flip Phone Accessibility (self.Blind)
submitted by jrs12
I need your help. I have a student with a visual impairment and a few other serious health impairments which limit his communication including a tracheotomy and quadriplegia. He has limited use of one hand, but communication has been tough. He has nystagmus, so traditional eye gaze machine devices don't work well for him. He doesn't like electronic means of communication such as a Dynovox. Because of his limited hand movements, a full keyboard is cumbersome. Small movements are better, and not needing to look at the device he is using is best. I was thinking I might be able to convert one of my old cell phones so that he could text using a system like T9 so that he only has to focus on nine buttons instead of 26. I thought the Ravine 3 flip phone had some accessibility mode similar to TalkBack or VoiceOver but I can't find it anywhere. Can any of you all help with turning on the accessibility mode on an old flip phone like the Ravine 3? Or... does anyone have any ideas for how to convert a smart phone to text in a tactile T9 type mode?

On both Android phones and iPhones you can download different keyboards, and it looks like there are T9 options.

Android: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ssw.android.keyboardold

iPhone: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/type-nine/id926008509?mt=8

Try the $1 I am not even sure if the phone you mentioned has accessibility features in it.

Sadly, touch phones are the in thing these days and that is not going away anytime soon.

That's exactly what I'm looking for! I'll let his family know. I thought the Ravine 3 had accessibility built in because I saw a student who was totally blind using it once. I heard text to speech on his phone but I'm not sure if it was an after market thing or not. I wish I still had contact with the student to ask!

The samsung haven, also on that website, is good too, but this one, the Gususto 3 is better.

I would still recommend an iPhone, which he can use to dictate texts and make speakerphone calls using voice controls without touching the phone.

Because of the trach he cannot speak.
