The community at /r/Skookum is looking for help with a special project - we are designing a low cost open source braille printer/embosser. (self.Blind)
submitted by datums
/r/Skookum is a community for technically minded people that like to get their hands dirty. We also have a separate division called the Skookum Skunk Works, where about 60 engineers, students, and tradespeople, work on special projects.

Our newest project is a low cost, reliable braille printer and image embosser.

We are doing this because a member of our community is adopting a seven year old blind girl from the Dominican Republic.

We already have funding for the project, in the form of donations.

If our machine is as impressive as I think it will be, we may offer it for purchase on a non profit basis.

From your community, we could use the following assistance:

-Anybody with special knowledge of printing braille and drag embossing would be a great asset.

-Someone who can help our friend, The Blind Wood Turner, use reddit with NVDA. He is a YouTuber, blind from birth, that makes beautiful objects out of wood. He's signed onto the project, but he can't navigate reddit. We are pursuing several approaches to allow him to communicate easily with the community, but I thought you guys might have a ready made solution.

Any other ideas or suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated.

I can help with NVDA. $1 is a link that will bring you to the download page for NVDA. $1 is a link to my dropbox that will give him access to two addons for NVDA. They give him the ability to use the popular eloquence voice, instead of the default for NVDA, which isn't very good. By click on $1, he can find a complete user manual for learning NVDA. After he reads that, feel free to put him in touch with me if he wants to specifically know how to use NVDA with Reddit. It's not much more than basic web navigation, but I can understand how it may be a little intimidating. Hope this helps :).

He is already proficient in NVDA. He just sucks at reddit.

How long do you think it would take for an NVDA user to master reddit, with your assistance?

Oh, now I understand! If he's already good with NVDA, Reddit will be totally easy. It's on your hands to explain to him how reddit works. Some general tips from me would be to navigate posts by using B, because each post has two buttons before it (upvote and downvote). To navigate between comments, I would use N, as it skips all of the links after each comment and just goes to the text of the next post. To find his inbox, I always go to the top of the page, press b, then do shift k a few times. That's really all there is to it tbh.

The biggest problem with Reddit and NVDA is that threading doesn't work. You can't track what comment is a reply to what without guessing. This is because comments are indented exclusively with CSS, rather than being placed into nested lists. So you can't know when you went up or down a level in the thread. But with a little practice, this mostly stops mattering. However, when you have a completely new blind Reddit user, they tend to just type a comment in the new comment box, rather than bothering to hit reply under the comment they're answering. So you'll probably need to explain that threading is a thing. But other than that, using Reddit is just basic web navigation.

How significant would it be if we could solve that problem?

The problem is already sort of solved; an extension for Firefox and Chrome called $1 can inject JavaScript into the Web page to make nested comments go into nested lists. However, it requires your verified email address, sends every URL you visit to the F123 Access servers, and is fiddly to set up and configure. But then, the only other way to solve this would be with Grease Monkey. And while that might be slightly more private, it's just as fiddly.

When the user be open to navigating Reddit via a mobile device? If he has an iPhone, BaconReader is very accessible and is the easiest to use out of any of the other mobile Reddit apps out there, even more so than the official one.
