Audio description for Blu Ray movies (self.Blind)
submitted by wsbull_35
Hey guys,

So almost, if not all, new movies released have an audio description option for those that are visually impaired. My older brother is legally blind, and he's a big movie fan. Usually when we go to the movies, he's given a headset that plays audio description. My question is if there's any similar device we can use for at home, or if we can download the file someplace else and just play it when the movie starts.

Some blue ray movies come with the audio description on the disc. You should be able to just turn it on within the audio settings menu. Unfortunately, if the disc doesn't include it, you're pretty much out of luck.

There are some pirate sites that specialize in distributing audio description as mp3 files. However, syncing them up with the visual movie is almost impossible. The audio description generally seems to be pirated from the British cut of the movie. So no matter what you do, if you try and sync the British audio description file with an American version of the movie, it will just slowly drift farther and farther out of sync. The only way I've found to use these files is to listen to them by myself.

Thanks for the reply. I know there's an app that does something similar but it's hard to find the files for it. Maybe more will come out since the tech is fairly new.

There are a few apps for it. But they're all restricted to only working in a few countries, and only with particular editions of the movies. I really, really hope this gets better. Because right now, even for home content that does include audio description, the only options are "on" or "off". So if I'm watching a movie on Netflix with friends, they're forced to hear the audio description, just because I need it. If I could get the audio description in an app, then I would be the only one hearing it over bluetooth or something from my phone.

I do feel it necessary to point out that two people with Netflix could sync up their playback pretty easily, but I agree this needs to change for home content.

> sync up their playback pretty easily,

I've tried this. It's easier said than done. Unless you have a really good connection, two Netflix streams is going to cause one or both of them to buffer. And once one starts buffering, now they're out of sync again. Plus, at least at my house, it's rare we get through a family movie without pausing at least a few times. The phone rings, the doorbell rings, someone needs the bathroom, someone needs a snack, someone missed something and wants to go back 30 seconds, etc, etc, etc. The experience of watching a movie at home isn't the same as in the theatre. Maybe that's just my family and friends, though. But I find thanks to buffering and pauses, I spend half the movie trying to get my stream back in sync, rather than paying attention to the movie.

You have a point. I've only ever done this with one other person present, and I guess I got really lucky with the buffering.

Netflix and Itunes have a vast number of TV shows with audio description, as well as tell me TV.

There is a lot of DVD's that have it too. See below website. Click DVD's at the top.
