Hi there.

When I was around 22 I had doctors telling me I had macular degeneration, but that couldn't be the problem because it's supposed to be aged related.

Last year I took an extra effort to figure out what exactly is going on. It was getting worse, and now I've got kids. It's not about just me anymore, it's about knowing what I have to do to best prepare for taking care of my family.

I've been seeing a retina specialist and he's feeling confident in diagnosing me with X linked retinoschisis. I don't drive at night anymore, and last month I failed my license renewal. Luckily, I have an eye exam from my doctor from the last 6 months the that has my better eye at 20/30 so I got a pass, but I'm pretty sure I won't get away with it in 5 years.

Most things are pretty normal, but there are some frustrating changes. When I watch my sons play sports I often lose track of them, even watching the wrong kid for a while before my wife points him out for me. Driving is a pain, even in daylight I can't clearly see most signs until I'm about to pass them. I feel like I miss a lot of small details too, which can lead to weird problems.

You start to learn to triple check your work, because while we all make typos, some of us are less likely to notice than others. Most computers I use are zoomed in. I have to ask my wife to read subtitles for shows.

Like I said earlier, it can be frustrating at times, but it is definitely a manageable condition.
