Buzzfeed is at it again: "11 Gay People Who Are Blind Describe How They Knew They Were Gay". All answers stolen directly from members of this community. (buzzfeed.com)

Wow, all I can say is that. I've always read about Redditers not liking Buzzfeed, but now I understand why. This is really scummy.

Paging /u/rkingett again. If I'm reading the Reddit terms of service correctly, you retain copyright on all comments you post to Reddit. As a working journalist, you might be in the best position to fight this exploitation. Unless, of course, Buzzfeed contacted you to ask for your permission to be quoted in this article? That seems rather unlikely to me, based on how Buzzfeed has handled previous coverage of blind folks. I'd love to know that I'm wrong!
rkingett 11 points 6y ago
They did not ask me to be quoted at all. I will fight this exploitation with every fiber in my body.
Nighthawk321 7 points 6y ago
Please do. You have the support of /r/blind I'm sure.

Still working on getting a contact person. For now, I posted this response. Some people say it is giving the post more air, but. I felt like I needed to write it.

Keep us updated! Perhaps once you find someone to contact at buzzfeed, it might be worth posting a comment and paging everyone else who had there words edited and used without there permission, letting them know what happened and what they can do about it.

Scummy Buzzfeed.

I heard back from Buzzfeed and I wanted to share the contact email with you all.

I am not sure if you knew you were in an article, but I would encourage you to write to the below email with your thoughts.

Spencer Althouse (BuzzFeed Feedback) <feedback@buzzfeed.com>

Below is my take on the above article if you would like to see other ways they have exploited the blind. You can also contact me on that website, if you want to talk about doing a proper article.

https://blindjournalist.wordpress.com/2017/05/26/how-buzzfeed-mocked-and-humiliated-the-gay-and-blind-communities/

His reply is below.

Hey, Robert!

Thanks so much for writing in! We'd be happy to remove you from the story if you want. Let me know!
Cheers,
Spencer

I am gonna write him back and demand that he publish all of our own articles, with payment, about what it is like to be blind and gay and the stigma's. You all deserve that chance.
Itsthejoker 1 points 6y ago
Boom. Best of luck!
rkingett 2 points 6y ago
I sent the below to him.

I actually demand that you publish an article or a personal essay or a feature written by me and others quoted in that article, about what it is like to be blind and gay and I would like Buzzfeed to pay us for our time and effort, If the other subjects do not want to do their own writing, I'd like for your reporters to work with each of them to craft a better message.

Could you tell people to contact me via my website? It is a little easier than reddit.
Itsthejoker 1 points 6y ago
I have no power here, but I'll give you an upvote for visibility! I definitely hope you get this resolved!

EDIT: /u/fastfinge, maybe worth stickying this comment chain?
rkingett 1 points 6y ago
I am still trying! At it again today. Actually, you do have power. Share my blog post to reddit comment above wherever you think it's welcome.

I think /u/fastfinge, stickied my comment above but I can't tell.
fastfinge [OP] 1 points 6y ago
We can sticky comment chains? TIL...
SpoilerAlert6 4 points 6y ago
Another example that Buzzfeed just wants exposure. They don't care about the communities they collaborate about, they just want to be heard. Buzzfeed gives actual reporters a bad name.
Terry_Pie 3 points 6y ago
If journalists are the fourth estate, Buzzfeed ~~journalists~~ ~~writers~~ compilers are the fourth estate within the fourth estate.

This makes me sick to my stomach.

Sticky comment for visibility: the response to this issue is being lead and organized by Robert W Kingett on his website at:
https://blindjournalist.wordpress.com/2017/05/26/how-buzzfeed-mocked-and-humiliated-the-gay-and-blind-communities/

Please check that article for updates. And if you were quoted in the article, or a blind gay man who would like to be part of a better story representing you, contact Robert via his website linked above.

If you're not directly involved in this, but would still like to support Robert in his efforts to respond, the best thing you can do at this point is $1 to support his efforts, or spread the word by sharing his post on Twitter, Facebook, or other subs.
