Hey, i just got a facebook account. How can i include image descriptions? I'm really bad at technology. So far i've just been including descriptions in the captions

I'd say just continue including image description in the captions I guess. In HTML there's alt tags, but I don't know if you can put this on facebook.
Also, by keeping it visible to sighted users like me, you could - maybe- be helping your sighted friends to realise that they'll need to have descriptions.
My two cents.

Awesome blog!

>I can’t scroll with any efficiency and am forced to ignore a whole lot of pointless nonsense on my cluttered screen.
Question, u/fastfinge although I remember it being on r/blind before - does a screen reader read all those annoying adverts popping up everywhere?
If so... noooooooo! (And can you turn it off?)
fastfinge [OP]2 points6y ago
It does. Most people install ad blockers, though. But on the iPhone, that isn't an option. So you just have to hear the ads.

> But on the iPhone, that isn't an option.
Damn it. Wonder why?
fastfinge [OP]2 points6y ago
Because it costs money to write an iPhone app. So Apple doesn't want to make Facebook or other app programmers angry by removing ads from there apps, because they might just make android only apps instead.
HailDaHailu2 points6y ago
So something like this?
'You better use Facebook ads, Apple, because it cost so much to make this thing for your iPhone platform that we *need* our return in cash... or else...I've heard android's cheaper....'
Sheesh.

From the blog post, specifically a section about Facebook's apparently faulty image description:
>Your much-lauded image description software—you know, that feature that meant we blind people would be able to “see” pictures—thinks dogs are cats and cats are dogs and any woman wearing white is a bride. It invents children that aren’t there and sometimes throws in an extra person, just to keep us all on our toes.
>(“You got married? Again?”
>“No no, I’m just wearing a white shirt. As you were.”)
1. Facebook has built-in image description? TIL.
2. It messes up THAT badly? Hhaha.... :)
EDIT: Actually that's not funny. Love that hilarious example you gave u/fastfinge (any woman wearing white is a bride... but how do they know who is a woman?) Still, this is Facebook that supposedly says its facial recognition software is one of the most important things.
(Is it possible to read tags on Facebook, ie if someone tags your name on a picture, is this readable via screen reader? I've never seen the point of such tags, so I hope this is the reason why they are used...)

Why do you have to use facebook? (~~reddit's better...~~) :)
garythevisionary2 points6y ago
Personally, I completely agree. I feel that Facebook is incredibly fake, boring, and unnecessary. Lately, everyone only posts videos of cooking or political views. I strongly prefer Reddit!
HailDaHailu1 points6y ago
Reddit, where your videos of cooking or politics have their own subreddits and can't get in the way! /s
Though both of them have thier issues...

I wish I could just not use Facebook. But these days family plans events exclusively on Facebook. So I have to have Facebook, or not find out anything about the extended family. Plus, a lot of younger people I know have Facebook accounts and mobile phones, but no email address.

Yeah, same here man. When I found out about reddit I stopped using facebook, then went to twitter when I wanna to be more personal (some of my friends use that as well as fb.) 140 characters, but still. I don't fully know about this yet, but there's something about fb 'possibly selling data to third partners' that I don't like... might not affect me either way, but still.
Your blog seems awesome. Might check out some more of your stuff if that's OK.

That website isn't my blog. I just share it on Reddit sometimes, because I agree with most of her articles. I don't have a blog of my own; I just concentrate on sharing the best stuff from other people on Reddit.
