Visually impaired people, when you went to college what did you take? (self.Blind)
submitted by cupcake6740
I'm going into my senior year of high school and am getting ready to leave in a year. Currently I use an iPad in school where I have my books, take pictures of the board, etc. Would an iPad in college be a good idea or would my normal computer be enough?

I would definitely say if you have access to an iPad, and the system is working for you, keep using it! If you are in the US, your college will most likely have some sort of office or center for students with disabilities; definitely get in contact with them asap and they should help you get started and navigate the process of talking to professors, getting to know campus, etc. :)

Schools should have a disability resource center. Get in touch with them as soon as you're accepted; they usually need proof of disability and it's good to start working with them to learn what's available. My school had a specific form that I would show to professors with the required accommodations, and would update/change as needed. They also provided me with digital copies of my textbooks rather than buying them.

Communicate with your professors. I would email my profs prior to class starting to give them a general overview of my limitations and what was on the form. Before or after first day in class, I'd show them the form and talk out basics; we'd talk again as something new would come up (group work, how to do certain homework, how to take tests, etc).

Agree with the others- look into a more powerful laptop as well. There's likely computer labs and the disability office may have something additional, but you can't always guarantee it's available and accessible vs. your own setup.

There is no reason not to bring your iPad, however, you will need some kind of computer for college. I would recommend having a lap top, because you will need to do some work in class, however, some of that might be doable on the iPad.

Good luck,

I would definitely second the recommendation to have some sort of actual computer along with the iPad. There are things you just can't do (or are a pain in the butt to do) on the iPad that are much easier or more possible on the computer. Also, depending on the program you're in there may be software you have to use for class that will just run on the computer.
