How do I open and display BRF files as braille dots? (self.Blind)
submitted by scykei
I'm currently trying to learn braille for fun and I would like to have some practice reading it. Does anyone know of any (hopefully free) service that would allow me to open BRF files and display the contents in the usual six dot cell format?

Thanks!

I looked for a complicated solution to translate BRF to unicode but the easier solution is to install the simbraille or braille font and view the brf file using that font. I was able to find several places to download the font but will let you search for them using your favourite search engine since I don't know what hardware/operating system you are using.

Thanks for your time. I'm using windows 10. Somehow I didn't even consider just downloading a font. I'll look for it but do tell me if you come across any other fonts that you can particularly recommend.

You should be able to $1 (Note looks like Duxbury's site no longer carries it).

Speaking of Duxbury, not sure exactly how you're going about learning it, but one software I can suggest is $1 so you can type in six-key mode or ASCII. Whichever method you learn/find most comfortable.

Wow I never knew that they had free software available. I didn't think I would be able to write my notes in braille on my computer without buying some really expensive software. That's awesome!

I also managed to get by BRF documents to display properly so I'm pretty excited right now. I've been learning using the UEBonline website, and I even got a slate to practice with. It's been really fun so far.

EDIT: it's quite a shame I can't find a way to import BRF files into the editor when I'm allowed to export to BRF.

Yeah it's pretty hard to come by nice tools for free/cheap in such a niche market when you consider the numbers.

Glad you got the BRF documents to display properly so that's awesome.

Oh yeah...slates are tricky in that you gotta work on punching them backwards but once you get past that, shouldn't be too hard I'd imagine.

Yeah I didn't realize $1. I have access to the full version of it called Duxbury that does. Incorrectly assumed Perky Duck at least allowed it. Sorry =(
