iOS Reddit clients and Voiceover accessibility (self.Blind)
submitted by csloth
What's the go-to iOS Reddit client with best Voiceover accessibility? The Reddit app has a lot of unlabeled buttons. Bacon Reader has very verbose button labels and seems to have some focus issues when trying to read long threads using a two-finger flick down. I checked Applevis but didn't see any current info.

I'm on the BaconReader beta testing group, and they have made a lot of great strides in making this app more accessible and VoiceOver compliant. There are definitely still some issues with comments and comment thread interaction, but for the most part everything else is now functional and usable. They are still working on the app and I give them an accessibility assessment with each release and they seem committed to making sure everything works with voiceover.

Great to read that they're taking accessibility into account. One of my use cases is to pick an interesting thread with a few hundred comments and listen as VO reads them while I do other things, so short button labels and no focus issues are pretty important for that situation.

Same here. I really enjoyed the functionality of the official Reddit app as they had the comment sections set up perfectly before they had to go in and fuck it all up. Keeping the user name, flair, and vote count consolidated into one voiceover cursor element immediately followed by the comment was great, and I'm really trying to get the bacon reader team to do the same thing here. Currently the username and vote count are separate elements followed by the comment, but at least they had the comment interaction buttons. A double tap and hold will bring up the comment interaction bar, but that functionality is currently rather finicky. Really looking forward to the updates when they work on it again. Already much better than it used to be, considering baconreader had all of the comet interaction buttons exposed underneath every individual comment, making a continuous read of the thread super frustrating.

I wonder if they could take advantage of the VoiceOver rotor to interact with comments. Then the buttons wouldn't have to be displayed with VoiceOver. You'd just have to swipe up or down on a post or comment to find the interaction options.

That is the exact thing that I requested of them as a feature, and pointed them to proper documentation on how to implement it along with examples from Facebook, etc. there is only one guy working on the iOS development side, and he will get to the comment accessibility issues after he tackles a few other larger bugs.

Has anybody figured out how to log in with the official Reddit app? I can't even get that to work, I hit "log in," and the username and password stay there without any changes. I've not seen anybody mention this problem before.
