Step-mother needs help (self.Blind)
submitted by phidya
Two years ago, my step-mother had a stroke during a triple bypass surgery. This stroke left her with extremely low vision.

Before this, she was an active woman who enjoyed driving all over, caring for her various farm animals, and was a professional dog groomer. She continues to groom dogs, but no where near the same frequency or at the same level before.

Most of her posts on Facebook are worrying me. She feels like her life is over now that she cannot see as well as she used to. She cannot drive, and she cannot do the things she enjoyed. She feels like she's trapped.

I know, however, that people with low vision live life like everybody else, just a little differently. I was looking for help for her in the form of a blind or low vision out reach in her area, but I couldn't find any that were for adults. I checked the resource page for groups in Kentucky (where she lives) but it was empty.

Does anyone know of any resources or groups I can use to help her and show her that she can still be independent and live her life?

Look into one of the NFB training centers. There is not one in her state, but they accept people from all over the country and world. I went to the Louisiana center for the blind and it changed my life. These centers are for adults and they teach all the skills you need to be a successful blind person. They also put a great deal of emphasis on the psychological and societal aspects of adjusting to blindness. She may be able to get financial help from the state, for attending a training center, if she gets a vocational rehabilitation counselor.

On the subject of guide dogs, it is strongly recommended that you have proper cane skills before you get a guide dog.

Thanks, I'll look into it for her and try to pitch it to her.

What about getting a guide dog?

I'm not too familiar with the services available in specific states, but Google indicated there may be two services.

They may be able to give you more helpful resources and provide direct service to work on learning new skills.

There are some great YouTube channels that talk about adjusting to blindness and low vision that might be helpful
