Trying to help my bored grandfather. (self.Blind)
submitted by Travis-Scott
My grandfather has been blind for some time, but as of recently he can no longer walk. He is very weak so ends up sitting in a single chair the entire day and just watches TV. He loves listening to very cool and educational content on the TV and learning from different programs, but these programs are not super often, and he often misses out on the visual details.

I was wondering if there was any way I could support him by providing him with something to do, like listen to podcasts of his interests. But I wasn't sure how he could even do that with his blindness. I only see him once every 4 months, so I can't be constantly helping him. Any ideas for something I could provide him with to stimulate his mind as he can't move and can't see anymore?

Podcasts are super easy. Any iPhone with VoiceOver will play them

Is iPhone with voiceover still easy to use? He's not tech savvy at all.

Everything is relative, but it's the easiest screen reader on any platform, in my opinion. You might also get him Amazon Alexa and he can use that to listen to podcasts, since maybe talking to it would be easier for him. You might be able to set up the podcasts with the Podcasts app on iPhone with Siri, here's a guide:

It's quite easy for me. Take into account that I've only been using screen readers for about a year or so. Just takes a few settings tweaks to navigate like it would without voiceover

ios is going to give him the easiest experience with a screen reader, it will have a learning curve, especially if he has never used a smart phone before, but if he wants to learn he should be able to. After he gets the basics he can listen to any podcast he wants; the Netflix app also works well with VoiceOver and Netflix has some audio described content now.

For audio described movies you might look into this site, https://www.blindmicemegamall.com/bmm/shop/Home. If you create a free account you can download as many movies as you want from their free collection which has thousand of offerings. This site would probably not be practical for your grandad to use on an ios device, however, you or another family member could set up a Drop Box account, sink it with the app on his device, and then download movies for him that he can access through the app. The movie files on the site are large, but they are just audio, no video, so they are not super large.

If your Grandfather does learn how to use an ios device he can do so much more then just watch movies. He could keep up with his family on Facebook, look up things he is interested in online, and even play games.

This may not help your grandfather, but for others here this may be a good idea. I created a website for my grandfather where we share his paints and lifestyle: https://www.grandfatherpaints.com.
He's is mentally very active and his vision is not that bad, so he loves reading the comments and seeing the blog posts I write for him
