Hello, r/Blind, I could use your help! (self.Blind)
submitted by Riptide78
tl;dr, I could use your help filling out a survey about how visual impairment affects how comfortable you are when taking prescription medication in general. $1

I'm a teacher attending a conference for an engineering pathway through a company called Project Lead the Way. The course I'm training for is to have students find a real world problem and attempt to make an actual solution. Some students take this to the point of having a patent, but the expectation is for them to actually build a working solution. Part of our training is going through the experience of the design process and, basically, doing that entire course in a couple of weeks. Here's where I could use your help.

Currently, we are considering the need and viability of making changes to typical prescription vials/bottles. If you are interested in taking our survey, please click through to the google form (I'm hoping that google forms work well with accessibility features). $1.

If you have anything else you'd like to add in general, please feel free to add it below! We know that there are some options for pill sorting out there that can be helpful, but we're hoping to design something that could be handed directly from the pharmacist to you and help minimize or eliminate any issues that could arise form having multiple prescriptions filled at once.

Thank you so much for your time!!

In the last section of the survey, it asks what features I want on a bottle. One option you may consider adding to there is braille on the bottles.

Also, when it asks how much we would be willing to pay for easier ways to take the correct dosage, I feel like there should be a text field to explain why we would pay what we checked. For example, I checked the lowest amount because I don't believe we should have to pay extra. Ease of access features such as these should already be in place when giving medication to people who are blind.

2 excellent points, thank you so much! I don't know how we missed the braille.

I use one of these, that is pre prepared by my pharmacy at no cost

For those with no or little useable sight, I'd imagine braille would be handy on it.

Oh! I hadn't seen that directly from pharmacists before, and it hadn't come up to the ones we have talked to. Great to know! Thank you!

There's also [scriptalk]
(https://www.envisionamerica.com/products/scripability/scriptalk/) which provides talking information about your prescriptions, and the company also provides large print and braille labels.

Many pharmacies throughout the country here in the US participate. The issue is not "does the technology exist" but "does your pharmacy use it, and is the end user aware of it." Many major mail order pharmacies also offer the service.

It's funny timing, we were just interviewing a pharmacist who was talking about that just about when you posted this. Thank you for your input!
