i don't know if i count as "low vision" (self.Blind)
submitted by luftkommandant
i have a 4th nerve palsy, so i'm cross eyed and it's getting worse. my right eye turns in, and i'm a little farsighted in my left eye and nearsighted in my right. it's going to get worse over my life, and i have problems with getting around because of it. i walk into things, i have a hard time typing, i have to hold on to walls, etc.

the thing is i can get surgery to fix my crossed eyes, i just can't do it because i have severe anxiety and i can't make myself go through with it. i've had some bad medical abuse (not related to my eyes) in my life and i just can't do it. and i've never seen anyone mention cross eyed people when talking about visually impaired people.

i don't know if it's okay to call myself low vision or visually impaired, and i just wanted some other opinions, if that's okay?

(i'd also like if no one tries to ask me about the surgery or encourage me to get it, i've thought about it a lot and talked it over with my parents and my therapist and my partners and for now it's definitely off the table)

In Canada, low vision is usually define as being between 20/70 and 20/200 (with 20/00 as legally blind). However, there is a lot of wiggle room there. Someone could have significant field loss as well as accuity loss, and not be legally blind. And in regards to refractive errors (farsighted and nearsighted), those usually don't count if they are correctible with glasses (For example, my visual accuity without my glasses is Count Fingers, but with my glasses, I'm at 20/25. So not really low vision).

Generally speaking, I think most people can agree that enough vision loss to make doing regular, day to day tasks difficult would be low vision.

If you don't feel comfortable with visually impaired, you can always say that you have some vision loss. From the sounds of it, low vision seems to be reasonable accurate for you as well.
