Columbia Research Study: New Technology to Play Racing Games without Vision (self.Blind)
submitted by DrBurst
I am a Research Associate at Columbia University's Department of Computer Science. We created new technologies to make it possible for people who are blind to play racing games (video games) using sound and controller vibrations, and we are looking for users to try out the new technology and give us feedback about it.

Study participants will play several versions of a racing game using a PlayStation 4 controller, a standard pair of headphones, and our new sound- and vibration-based technologies. The study will last no longer than 90 minutes and participants will be paid $25 for their time. We can conduct the study at Columbia University or wherever would be easiest for the participant (we are happy to travel anywhere in the New York metropolitan area).

This study has been appoved by the Columbia University Institutional Review Board (IRB Protocol Number AAAR2378).

Feel free to ask any questions and we will respond.

**FAQ**

*Will I be paid to participate in the study?*

We will give you $25 to pay you for your time.

*Are there any risks?*

There are no physical risks related to participating in this research study.

*Are there benefits to taking part in the study?*

You will not receive personal (direct) benefit from taking part in this research study. However, the information collected from this research may help others in the future. We hope to demonstrate to racing game developers that integrating our technology will make it possible for players who are blind to play racing games.

*What information will be collected?*

We'll ask you to complete a survey after you play the racing game. We will also collect some of your driving data as you play the racing game. No other information will be collected.

*How will my information be protected?*

Your survey data will be fully anonymized and encrypted. We will not ask any identifying information in the survey.

Why does this have to be racing games only? That said, I'm in New Jersey, South Jersey, not New York, otherwise I'd jump on this immediately. are you at liberty to tell us which games participents will be playing?

The study in its current form is focused racing games, but we hope to expand to other types of games in future work. We potentially may be able to travel to South Jersey. Please fill out the form linked below and we can discuss. In order to not bias the results, we can't say which games will be played at this time.

I would have tested the game on an Xbox1, as there are vibrations in the triggers as well. Best of luck though.

Thanks for the suggestion. That's also something that we would like to try soon. It would be easy for us to add that functionality to our system the way that we've engineered it.

Is there an expectation that subjects will enjoy these games or is something else being explored here?
DrBurst [OP] 2 points 5y ago
We are holding the study to see if our technologies allow players who are blind to have the same experience playing racing games as anyone else would have. We will do this by asking some specific survey questions after participants try out our technologies. We hope that people will have fun playing the games in the study too, especially those with limited experience playing racing games.
