Hi r/Blind! What are the most difficult challenges in the kitchen for you? (self.Blind)
submitted by _Juvenile
Hi r/Blind,

As part of our senior year design project, my team and I are investigating and developing assistive technologies for blind individuals in a kitchen setting.
We would like to know a little bit more about the successes and challenges that you guys have with cooking and in the kitchen.

It would really help us figure out how to tailor our solution if you could take a second to help fill out our survey!

Thank you and hope to hear from you!

Two pain points... Checking whether meat cooking in the pan is done without seeing if it's brown or not. Checking levels when filling containers with boiling water.

I have a hard time identifying foods/liquids that have gone bad. If it doesn’t smell bad, I can’t tell if a food (ie bread) has gone moldy. I keep good track of when I purchase things, and I utilize my freezer for even fresh foods, but sometimes foods will turn before their expiration date.

An easier way to label appliance buttons. The braille labels I have on my microwave keep coming off or sliding around

My mom, who's legally blind, still cooks for my dad and for family get togethers. Like others here she has difficulty measuring liquids without sticking her finger in to gauge. I'm sure there are others, I'll ask her thanksgiving day as she's making the turkey!!
