does anyone use a guide cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by luftkommandant
i've been thinking of using a guide cane (as opposed to a long or id/symbol cane) because i have a lot of trouble with depth perception, but i can get around mostly fine. it's just stairs and curbs and things like that, and because of my other conditions tripping could mean a trip to the emergency room. i contacted a local blind association today but until i can get to o&m i was hoping someone might be able to answer a couple questions i have?

first off, how do you actually use a guide cane? i can't find anything on them online, and i won't be able to get to an o&m for a while at least because my mom is pretty unsupportive (she doesn't believe that i'm "bad enough" and wants to pressure me into surgery that i'm not ready to have).

second off, can you use a regular support cane as a guide cane? i have one for my other disabilities, and as of now it's all i'm going to get for a while because again, unsupportive mom. it is white, though, but that's all i could sneak past her.

thank you!

I use a guide cane, am low vision. You hold it diagonally across your body, so people can see it behind you, as well as in front, and don't swing it repeatedly like a long cane. For stairs and curbs ect you tap it to check where they are.

My parents reaction is the same, but screw them, they're not the ones with the eye disease!

No problems. One thing though from someone who only started using a cane in the last year, be prepared for random people to occasionally come up to you and ask you if you need help, a lot!

This guide is pretty good and never seems to come up in searches:

You can use your support cane if you can see objects or drop-offs ahead of you. Don't lean forward, though...if you find you're leaning forward you should also use a guide or ID cane in your other hand.
