Need confidence in my cane skills (self.Blind)
submitted by TurtleKnife
Hi everyone I am a 20 year old male with a vision impaired. I have been considered blind since I was born. I am currently in college and act like a normal human. I do own a white cane but I don’t use it. I just keep it in my bag and don’t take it out. I feel it is time I buck up and actually use it. However I can get past a mental barrier that I’m having with myself. I keep telling myself that people are going to look at you weird or something like that. My brain is dumb ok lol. Anyway I just think I need to get some self confidence in order to start using it. Sounds dumb but I think I need to start using it with my vision being at 20/400 with correction. Anyway thanks for your help I guess.

Practice practice practice...

You can call your state’s Council of the Blind or similar agency and get connected to an O&M professional. They can help you with cane skills and familiarize you with new environments.

It does take a bit of time to get used to using a cane, especially people's reaction. But you get used to it pretty fast. I always remind my clients that the white cane is a tool to help keep you safe, and it doesn't matter what others think.

I'm kind of in the same boat, except my vision is around 20/700. I do actually think it's a personal choice and that there are tradeoffs, but if you feel you want to use it but you're embarrassed, the only solution is to just bite the bullet and decide to use it all the time. Don't use it sometimes, just use it always, since the decision process is where the trouble lies. Just make one decision to use it and that will make it easier for both you and the people around you.
