Quick Question (self.Blind)
submitted by thejamiewilson
Just a minor curiosity, do blind people save money on electricity because they don’t have a need for light? I hope this doesn’t offend. I am just very curious

I'm totally blind. I regularly do leave the lights off, so I guess that probably saves a little electricity. However, these days I have a lot of smart home devices (google home, smart thermostat, smart plugs, etc) because they make my life a lot easier. And I use them more than a sighted person might. So I suspect the electricity I save on lights gets used by that stuff. Also, if someone else turns on one of my lights, and I didn't know they turned it on, it could stay on for hours or even days before I realize it got left on. So even though that only happens about once a year, it probably sucks up even more of those "savings".

I definitely don't use as much electricity as most people because I usually prefer low light situations. But i think most blind people live with somebody else so I don't really feel like it changes much.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense!

I’m partially sighted. I probably use more on electricity because I can’t see anything in the dark. I can see a lot better in the light.

You would spend more to power things like a refrigerator than most lights. Some people who listen to TV audio without turning on an actual TV may save more money than those who don't use lights.

That, and on TV and computer monitor
