How is sex ed taught to blind students? (self.Blind)
submitted by Kholnoy
I get that blind kids are probably told by a parent or teacher about what happens, but what was used to teach the physical aspects such as reproductive cells, organs, and prenatal development? I imagine teachers would have models for kids to touch, but having kids grope sex organs might be seen as controversial to some.

It really depends on the country/state. Everything from blind children being excluded from sex ed entirely, under the thinking that they will/should never have sex anyway, all the way up to having models like you said. Heck, in a lot of states, sex ed for sighted students is mostly non-functional. Blind students have the same problems, magnified.

Do they actually say that blind people shouldn't have sex? (Or won't) I'm actually feeling a bit upset by that idea.

I have heard "probably won't" directly, in sex-related discussions. I have never heard "shouldn't" personally, but I've spoken to blind people who say they've been told by both teachers and medical professionals that they should never have sex, or if they do, they must undergo Sterilization. And I have no reason to disbelieve them. I know mandatory Sterilization for blind students was the policy at the Ontario School for the Blind for a while.

For one of our older camps, we try to do a "refresher" course on sex ed, because most of the kids have huge gaps in knowledge. We ended up eventually getting a Toronto Public Health nurse to come in and teach that section, they had better numbers and better models.

Unfortunately, many parents don't bother talking to their kids about it, so they learn in bits and pieces from other classmates, which don't always give accurate information.

In my case despite being considered legally blind since childhood. I was never given any special sex ed. It was just normal sex ed. Fortunately for me I could still see enough to do fine when they handed out worksheets... So if the question is whether or not I got to fondle my classmates or my teachers or myself or some model. No I didn't.

I meant a plastic model or diagram. I'm not that stupid ;)

I should have clarified that I meant plastic diagram when I said model. Lol
