Christmas presents for a young blind child? (self.Blind)
submitted by dingus_mcginty
Hey all, my office is sponsoring a family for Christmas this year and one of the children is blind. He's an 8 year old boy and im struggling to find something that would be fun for him. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

There are lots of books available for blind children, and many card and board games (Rummikub, monopoly, and uno, as well as standard card decks) can be found in Braille versions. :) I loved Monopoly at about that age. My sister preferred Uno by then. (Neither of us are blind- my husband is. We have Braille Rummikub and Monopoly.)

Personally I would suggest clay- I loved it at a kid and still do now. It's all touch and feel and can even be therapudic.

Basketball with sound so he can hear where it’s at. As a braille transcriber I’ve adapted board games with textures instead of colors. Also find out if there are any video games he can play. Many blind people play video games.

Hi there! I would definitely consider these $1 people. In a couple days they will be launching a revolutionary version of their first product which is called MyEye 2. It's a tiny camera attachment that can snap to any kind of glasses frame and whispers into your ear what is around. It can also read text from any surface. Street signs, emails, newspapers any form of text you can imagine. It really is one of the best $1. I don't know what your budget is but after being withness how this wearable tech can change the way visually impaired people live, I would definitely recommend it. I believe it would make a great gift for an 8 year old.

No way. Great idea but the technology just isn't there yet, especially for a kid.

I know it sounds too good to be true but, the artificial vision technology is there. If it wasn't they wouldn't be able to make self-driven cars, how do you think they work? This $1 device is also made with the similar technology. A tiny camera and digital sensors work together, the ai algorithm is capable of not only collecting but also processing data in real time. Check out this $1 too! I know it's not affordable for everyone but it does exist!

Wonderbaby.org has a few different toy lists. I think they tend to be geared towards younger kids but a couple of them have stuff appropriate for a a range of ages.
