Attempting to use TalkBack (self.Blind)
submitted by BeardedJerry
As the title says. I was just trying to use talkback on Android for the first time and honestly the experience was not pleasant. Certain gestures don't seem to work at all and honestly I can "type faster with my eyes closed" (the quotes mark where I closed and opened my eyes)

On top of that it drives me freaking nuts that the voice mispronounced words like 'twenty' (Twen-tie) or says read as in "I am reading" instead of "I read it already"

I want to spend a day operating my phone like that but if things just don't work or I have to spend 10 minutes fumbling to type a message I could otherwise type with my eyes closed in 15 seconds or less then what's the point even? I just wanted operate my phone without eyestrain.

Is iPhones screen reader better or are there any better screen readers for Android?

I want to try again. Maybe I can get used to the typing but if there's a better more comfortable way of doing it I'd like to know before I get invested in trying to make TalkBack work.

I started on a iphone, then moved to samsung for a couple of years and now I am back to an iPhone. Having used both the iphone is so much easier.

Just want to say that Apple's Voiceover is all-around superior to Talkback. It seems to be what more than 90% of blind people use.

Definitely superior. Better integration of the OS and user interface, and don't have to worry about the OS fragmentation issues that Android has.

Ahem. Sighted persob here. I have fiddled around with talkback a lot due to my best friend being blind and i have news for you. Is you android phone pretty old? If it is, it won't get the newest talkback updates for it's operating system.

Secondly, stop using vibration. It'll make the inputs a lot faster since it doesn't have to lag behind with the buzzes and so on.

Change the menu style from a list to that other one where you can put a finger on one of the corners and or use a selection wheel in the middle.

Play around with the settings a littlw before throwing it away. My friend switched phones because he hated apple's TTS.

On a Galaxy Note 4. Can't afford a new phone right now because Canada among other things.

I guess I'll play around with settings a bit. Thanks

Yeah, you are using a much older TalkBack system. Unfortunately, because of the way the operating systems and user interfaces work, many phones don't get the newest version for quite a while (it at all).

The Cyber Monday deals just ended, but Boxing Day is in another month. You might be able to get an older iPhone 6, possibly even a 7 for free, depending on your plan. Check with your carrier.

I never thought about that. Thanks I'll keep an eye on my carrier.
