Make website more accessible to blind people?(self.Blind)
submitted by Whereami259
Hello, I'm developing small news website and an app for it.
Are there any ways to make website easier for blind people to use? Any features I should include?
Thank you :)

Surprisingly, screen-readers don't require much attention, so just mark up text using the proper HTML tags, label your images, avoid moving focus, and avoid dynamic changes to the pages. Some websites include a link that is only accessible by screen readers to jump to the page's content area, but this isn't strictly necessary if you use landmarks and, most importantly, mark headings as such, because the first thing I do when I browse a news website for the first time is to try to jump directly to the highest order heading I can find.

Use semantic HTML from the get go. From there try and use progressive enhancement.

I'm not visually impaired but my grandad is and uses a screen reader - but the screen reader reads every bit of code in the web page. It drives him crazy! He's never seen a web page as he lost his sight almost completely about 20/30 years ago, so it's really difficult for him to navigate a page. This could be useless input but i only subscribe to this sub to watch out for stuff that might be of use to him so thought I'd chip in.

What screen reader does he use? It cant parse html code?
It's not useless, what I got out of it is to strip down the site and make easier controlls for it.
Thanx.

I'll be honest, I have no clue. If you have any suggestions of good ones, please throw them my way! He lives a 3 hour drive from me so it's hard to get time to just sit and go through his computer together.
It does weird stuff such as at one point on the BBC weather pages - can't read out the weather for the day properly because it's an image/code

If he's on windows, $1 is the best. It works just fine on the BBC weather pages. Either he's using an ancient screen reader, or there's user error.

Probably ancient, I'll find out and see if he can switch. Thanks for the recommendation!!
