Greetings! I have Stargardt disease, and I run a blog about what it’s like to be a blind university student. I talk about adaptive technology, mobility, accessibility, and coming of age as a blind girl in the sighted world (with some philosophical musings and hilarious anecdotes along the way). Sending the link to my gf, she's had it since age 12.

I love that you memorized the eye chart!

Thanks! I can still recite it to this day. It’s amazing how long you can simulate normalcy when you’re afraid of standing out.

Totally! I've been asking my surgeon to change his chart since I have it memorized (unintentionally!). My vision improved after a transplant but Im fairly certain my knowing what the letters are is affecting what I think I can see now.

I have the same problem! I often end up saying something like ‘I know that’s an E because I’ve memorised it, but if I didn’t know I would probably say it’s an F, or maybe a B or an R.’ That lets them know that I can see the general shape of the letter, but not enough to really pinpoint what it is.

And 'I know letters don't repeat so they can't actually both be O. Maybe a C, G, D?'
