Hey fellow redditors! I’m taking a sketch-writing class and wrote a sketch about blind people based on an encounter I witnessed on the subway. Basically, a group of blind people boarded the train and it was crowded, so they bumped into each other a lot before making their way to seats. One of the guys in the group joked, “Wow! Instead of bumper cars, it’s like bumper blind people.” Not the best joke, but it made me chuckle.
Anyway, one student in my class said the sketch might be offensive, and that I should try to find out what blind people might think of it. I think it’s a valid critique since I myself am not blind and don’t want to make fun of an entire group of people. If you’re interested in reading it and giving me some honest feedback, feel free to shoot me a message. I would appreciate it so much! Thanks a ton!

Ahh, a funny skit, I see what you did there... oh, wait.

Well damn this is funnier than my entire sketch lol

Honestly, that's not offensive to me at all. I often use humor to cope with blindness! And id love to see that skit

A blind guy walks into a bar...then a table, then a chair.

You should watch the Just For Laugh sketches that they do about blind people. I have no idea if they get in trouble with the Montreal Association for the Blind or anything, but I expect they would have spoken up if there was an issue.

I have not seen them. Are these online somewhere?

On Youtube, look up "Just For Laughs Blind", a bunch should show up. I'll send a few links just in case.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA-y_leT-30 - this is one of my personal favourites (I'm an orientation and mobility instructor, so I work with guide dogs a fair bit). The guide dog is wearing a proper harness and the mira logo, so I suspect that is an actual guide dog (likely still in training).

For those with vision loss, I don't think the videos have any descriptions... and there is almost no dialogue, it all comes from facial expressions.

Thanks so much! This is awesome!

No problems. If I lived in Montreal, if anything even remotely bizarre happened, I would assume they were filming somewhere nearby.

I’m blind, and I love making jokes about it. I see (or not...) where you’re coming from though. I’d be happy to give your script a read if you’d like. :)
