Careers for a blind person that aren't office jobs? (self.Blind)
submitted by ryddyt
If I didn't have a degenerative eye disease and if I wasn't legally blind I think I'd work in recreation or video production. However, these jobs are very difficult for a blind person. That said, I really just hate office jobs. I hate being stuck at a desk all day, I hate doing the same thing all day, I hate the lack of creative freedom, and I hate the general culture surrounding 9-5 office jobs. What are some good career options for blind people that aren't just office jobs? Something with a bit of variety, something where I'm maybe on my feet a bit, something that I can be good at but also enjoy a little? Thanks!

Teacher is pretty good for this stuff, especially in higher ed. You get some flexibility in how you do things (sometimes) and you don't have the office culture.

My wife works for a charity that supports people with sight loss and they have lots of opportunities for people with sight loss. She also knows a lot of people in work with sight loss. Some people work in IT as engineers, some are teachers, some are rehabilitation workers. There are lots of exciting opportunities, including office based roles. I would say don't write off the office jobs - they could be a great stepping stone to something really exciting and if you have a great work team then it makes the work itself more enjoyable.

I'm curious. My wife is going blind. Her vidion has deteriorated enough where she hasn't worked in 3 years except for an occasional odd babysitting job for friends. Her vision counselor pretty much was only able to recommend a job folding towels. She used to oversee group homes. She doesn't want to work next to the severely mentally disabled people that she used to supervise. It's mindless, menial work and about the only job to which they referred her.

I think her vision counselor didn't know what they were talking about. I don't know your wife's level of education or previous experience, but I know multiple blind people, some of them family members, who have had much more interesting and fulfilling careers than "folding towels". For example, my great uncle who has been totally blind since the age of 16 was actually a psychiatrist for several decades and has owned multiple businesses. My other uncle, who is legally blind, has a master's degree in Civil Engineering and he works on computers regularly. There is zero reason that a blind person can't have a job doing something other than menial tasks.

I think she needs to go back to school. She never finished her undergraduate. I'll run this by her. Thanks.

I am legally blind and am going into the video production. I am currently enrolled in college for video production. So yeah it can be done.

Can you elaborate on this? What sort of accomodations do you use? Seems to me like with all the different gadgets and tiny buttons and wires on the floor would be difficult, not to mention the act of filming something or editing video.

I know people with vision loss who work as a martial arts instructor, as a lawyer, as a counselor, and a translator for the police. Also a cook, a motivational speaker, and public service liason

I have ONH and managed to get a job working for the Navy, you might try and see what federal jobs there are available
