I'd like to write my blind boyfriend a love letter in Braille. Any advice on how to accomplish this would be greatly appreciated. (self.Blind)

Pretty self-explanatory here, I need to figure out a way to have a love letter transcribed in Braille. My boyfriend (33) went blind at 26, and has always struggled to learn Braille. I'm hoping I can help motivate him with reading material he actually wants to read. Help?

If you wouldn't be embarrassed if others saw your letter, organizations for the blind (e.g. the CNIB in Canada) will prepare Braille documents for you for a reasonable cost.

I tried this the other week! CNIB will loan out a braille typer... except that all of them are (apparently) out for repairs at the moment. So. I used a $1. Type what you want to say into there. Copy and paste into a word document. Screen shot and flip the image horizontally, then print this out on regular paper. Size 20 seemed to work, but I'd go a little bit bigger. Use the side of a cereal box... cut out the rectangle, tape the backwards braille paper on the inside surface... the rough cardboardy bit. Place corrugated cardboard beneath the cereal box part. Using a needle, poke through each dot. This is why you flipped the braille... so it comes out the right way when poked through to the other side. Once done poking through, remove the piece of paper taped on there. Use something slightly thicker, and poke through all the holes again (from the inside, to the glossy outside again, so the raised surface is on the smooth side). A toothpick might work well for this. It takes a lonnnng time, but it was readable. Make sure you have good lighting. Shadows are the shit, and can mess up where you think the end of the needle is and make letters warped.

You can buy a Braille slate and stylus online for about $10.

Cool idea! Try this $1 and maybe poke holes with pencil or warp material with hot rod?

Yes, this works in a pinch! Print it out, hold it up to the light and poke from the back to the front

what area do you live in, you could contact the local blind school or BSVI or DBS offices there are people who need the practice Brailling so it would be a win win

Do you know about $1? It's a free service. You upload a file or enter text, and they will email back to you (no spam) the words or file in braille, e-book, or .mp3 (audio) formats. If you upload a .pdf or image file, you also can choose to have it converted to a more accessible format (with tags so that it can be read by a screen reader, for example).

If you upload text to convert into braille, it's run through an automated system to convert it, and then they email the converted file back to you. The type of file you get back depends on what you selected for your braille options. Hopefully someone here can point you in the right direction.

* Contraction level (options are Grade 1 or Grade 2).

* Target format (dozens of options here, with the default choice of pef292+pd).

For example, I asked RoboBraille to translate "Hello, poopistoofunny!" into braille, choosing British English, contraction level Grade 2, and target format unicode. They sent back a text (.txt) file, and $1

Because of all the conversion options, RoboBraille might be a useful site for your boyfriend to know about.
