What's a good Gift for a Teenager that is new to being blind? (self.Blind)
submitted by ballisticRenegade
One of my friends who I have known since he was born has recently lost all of his sight. He is really into art and he likes a lot of cool things! but I'm worried that most of the things i would think to get him are cool because they LOOK cool and that just won't cut it. So what I'm asking is What are things that you like and enjoy that would make good gifts for a teenager who can't see?

How about a textured rubix cube in the low end

I am new to this subreddit. I come from a family that has a wide variety of visual impairments, my aunt Dee has this bad ass "Braille note touch tablet" it has a Google tablet (with a touch screen) with an integrated Braille display that is easy to use it even has a a physical Braille keyboard. She got my grandfather a "brailledge" for Christmas this is basically a kindle paper white compared to her tablet. I told her about Reddit and I think we may see her on here in the near future. The tablet like ahe has may help with learning Braille. My mother and Aunt Dee both have a "victor reader" which holds audio books, podcasts, records notes, ECT... These are a few things I have picked up on. They usually find books and things through free matter for the blind, which my grandmother worked for back in the day of tapes.

Braille tablet? Cool, but $500? Ouch.

find out what books or literature he likes to read, then get him signed up for a digital reader and audio books from your public library its free and they have almost everything

Pass that extra knowledge along, regardless of what you get.

iPod Touch. All apple products have built in accessibility for low vision to no vision. There are tons of games and artistic apps that are enjoyable without vision. Applevis.com is a good resource.

Edit to add: BARD Mobile for audiobooks is also available on iPod Touch

there are some video games out there for the blind.
Could also research if Argus II is an option and start a fund.

64 Ounce Games adapts games for people with visual impairments. The Blindfold series of apps are also made to use without vision (though headphones are often needed) I also like Audio Game Hub as an app. I'm terrible at gift giving.
