Nepal bans blind people from climbing Everest (theguardian.com)

If they weren't in it for the tourism money and actually cared about safety or their environment, nepal should make everest off limits for everyone at this point. The mountain is litered with frozen corpses and garbage

They strongly recommend no one attempt it, but they're in a tough spot. They're far from a wealthy country, and they need the tourism dollar. Everest is a big draw for the tourism dollar, so they can't just say no to everyone - unlike here, where I believe we (finally) instituted a ban on people climbing Uluru/Ayer's Rock.

I was just going to say the same - I'm probably never gonna climb Everest (or even go to Nepal for that matter), but this irks me out of principle. I mean, if a blind person can find a good Sherpa and is experienced enough, why the hell would the risk for them be any higher than for a sighted person? Instead they should focus on getting the people intending to climb Everest to weed out the unprepared and inexperienced climbers.

This annoys me. Not that I was personally planning a trip to Everest this weekend but who knows. I've recently gotten into hiking mountains within the last 2 years and I could see myself with more experience in the future wanting to tackle Everest. Such a shame and these policies should be reverted.

Does Eric Weihenmayer have anything to say about this? I think if anyone has proven the capabilities of the blind when it comes to mountain climbing, he has.
