Anyone in need of a guide dog in Florida or Georgia? (self.Blind)
submitted by sydhasmybike
A friend is helping to rehome a guide dog. He served for an elderly man who has passed away. He was fully trained by a good organization and is accustomed to working. He is a 3 year old black lab. A home visit is required.

Contact the school. This is not your responsibility and could get you in deep water if any accidents result from a person working with the dog. The school will be able to help with rehoming for sure.

What other people have been saying, contact the school. it's really dangerous to just give a guide dog to another person. I shutter at the thought of it.

Have you contacted the school? They may be able to help with that. Oftentimes, the family that raised the dog as a puppy is glad to adopt the dog if they need a new home.

From what I understand (I’m posting for a friend), they want the dog to go to another working home. She has a service dog and I think she is in contact with the school.

Most places don't allow you to just give a working dog to someone else. There is a certain amount of training involved for both the dog and the person, and it could actually be dangerous for someone to get a guide dog but not get the proper training to use one.

For example, a common misconception is that guide dogs do all the navigating. In reality, it is the person who navigates, and gives commands when to turn, while the dog's responsibility is to avoid obstacles. Over time for a specific route, the dog can learn to navigate it themselves, but that usually doesn't apply to new routes.
