#Blind: the official IRC channel for /r/blind (self.Blind)

Some folks have asked about this in the past, but until now we didn't really have the time or resources to make this a thing. However, now I do! We're using IRC, as unlike Discord or Slack, clients that work with screen readers are widely available.
And so: announcing #blind, our official chat channel. The channel is hosted by $1 (/r/snoonet), the IRC network for Reddit. If you're on Windows, you can use $1, $1, or $1 as good accessible chat options. On Iphone, try $1, or on OS X, try $1.
The server you want is irc.snoonet.org. on port 6667, or port 6697 for SSL. Low vision or sighted users might also want to check out the $1. A more detailed guide is also $1.

Adium is more of an IM client and the team working on it has nearly abandoned it. I picked this username long before I knew about the IM client and constantly getting questions asking for help. I have never had anything to do with the project.
I am a Mac user and love $1, but it's not free. $1 is a good free client.

I can confirm it works with Textual, but I can't say how it compares. I am also not blind so my experience is very limited in this area. I make websites and make sure they are compatible with screen readers, but that is all.
The main chat window of the IRC channel is identified as a web element and you have to use arrow keys to scroll down for each new message. It's not automatic but you can also enable a short beep to indicate that a new message appears so you can scroll down to the next message.

Thanks for the info! Adium does have an automatic option to read messages. So I suspect a lot of folks will prefer that, though.

Also want to share $1, allowing you to stay connected 24/7. You can login to multiple devices and won't miss any messages while your offline. (Side note for those with a spotty internet connection, you won't annoy everyone with repeated join and quit messages because it will always appear that you're in the channel)
You have to have a registered account on the IRC network for a month, but if you're an avid user it's worth the wait.

Well, they actually do have a fully capable API. However, they say in the terms of service that you may not use the API to write third party clients, only bots. And people caught using third party clients are banned. But if they removed that from the terms, and allowed anyone to write a Discord client, they already have an API powerful enough to allow it. It's not technical limitations preventing it. It's that they're a malicious company.

Well that’s a crap limitation. At least I fully understand why you will not write one now. That makes complete sense. Why not move to IRC cloud with all of the accessibility enhancements that have been done? My guess is because you don’t want them hanging on to your logs for however long, even if it is just today? I’m guessing that use a browser window, they probably don’t use a client one. That’s my only drawback to that, I don’t care if they hold onto my logs for a day. I just don’t want to yet another browser window open in Firefox.

Well, anyone who wants to can use irc cloud. Just configure it to connect to irc.snoonet.org and join #blind. Irc cloud is effectively just another client, that's all.

I do hope that you'll consider moving to Discord once the app does become fully accessible. Still, this is awesome, and I'll join this.

Nope. Absolutely no chance. I mean, not unless they consider publishing a fully open protocol. Something like a quarter of our users are on Linux. And at any rate, they've been promising access fixes yearly since 2015, and have delivered zero improvements. So I don't see that happening any time soon.
