What would be my vision according to the US system? (self.Blind)
submitted by pxlgirl
I was trying to find an answer to this but had no luck so far, so maybe Reddit can help. Anyways, I live in Europe, we use the metric system, and the eyesight is measured in %. The eye charts are in 5 meters distance, that’s roughly 1 meter less than 20ft (6 meters). I can read the first two top rows with correction, which means my vision would be 20%. If I was 6 meters away, I would barely be able to see the first top row. Without correction, I have around 5% eyesight. So what would my vision be according to the US system?

It sounds to me like you're between 20/150 and 20/200. That's either just about legally blind by our definition or a little more acute than that, which we would call visual impairment. Legal blindness in the US is 20/200.

TIL my vision is about 20/400-500..

Ah good to know. Still can't figure out how your percentage system works over there ha.

Neither can I, we only use diopters where I live (I'm not OP).

Well, sorry to hear about your vision, if that is indeed bad news for you. I had 20/400 years ago and it wasn't too bad, but I was never interested in driving.

Europe does use the metric system, but most places use meters (6/6) instead of feet (20/20).

Here is a conversion chart.

Generally speaking, the top letter (often E) is roughly the limit of legal blindness, or 20/200 (or 6/60).
