Where can I store my cane? (self.Blind)
submitted by Raf_AL
You may wonder why I ask this. Shouldn't you carry your cane all the time? The answer to that question is that I'm currently studying sound engineering, and we're often tasked with carrying heavy stuff like speakers and mixers to different locations, which means you have to use both of your hands to carry stuff most of the time. At first I had no Idea where to put my cane when I had to do things with both my hands. Sure I could put it down somewhere, but then I'd have the small problem, not being able to find my cane again. Recently I've developed the habit of putting the cane on my back, when I have to do something that requires both my hands. I usually put it in the back of my hoodie. At first I thought people would think I'm stupid doing it like that. Nobody in my class is visually impaired after all. However, Everyone actually thinks it looks cool, and now everybody calls me the Blind Ninja, when we have to transport stuff around the school :D. The only downside is that my cane falls of my back very easily.
I was just wondering if someone knows a good way to put the cane on my back, without having to adjust it all the time, so it doesn't fall off? I want to keep my style going if possible :D

Have you thought about a $1?
NeedingVsGetting 2 points 5y ago
That's AMAZING!!!! Thanks so much!!

I had no Idea such a thing existed. I think I wouldn't have asked about this If had thought about it :D

Don't worry, I only know about it because I know a girl who owns one! She had hers custom made though.

I like the idea of using a cane holster. It looks nice and it probably would make me look more professional and give my friends another excuse to call me the Blind Ninja :D

Only problem Is that I currently have a cane with a rolling tip on it.
KillerLag 2 points 5y ago
The cane holster has a larger side, so that is where the rolling tip goes. It isn't very common, though... In the 10 years I've taught O&M, I've only ever seen it twice, and they were both high school aged.

Many people put it into a small backpack, but that may not help your situation either if it takes up a lot of time to do that.

Yeah. we have to be as fast as we can, when we'r doing live shows, so the backpack isn't really the best solution. but thanks for the advice

I think you (or a crafty friend) could make one pretty easily. Maybe post something where there are industrial designers. I feel like a Velcro strap and a carabiner would be a good place to start.

How do you navigate without it?
Raf_AL [OP] 2 points 5y ago
I'm only visually impaired, so I only navigate with it, when i'm on unfamiliar places.

What about one of those sword cover/sleeve things that you strap onto your back?
Raf_AL [OP] 1 points 5y ago
That could be useful. thanks for the tip.

Just fold it up and tuck it into your waste band.

This is a family subreddit

There should be some extra room in the elastic after it’s folded. You can put your hand through that and let the cane hang from your wrist (if not too awkward with what you’re carrying). Even with a roller tip the opposite/handle end may fit in your back pocket.

Edit: spelling

If you don't mind me asking, how do you navigate without the cane when your carrying things? Also sound engineering is super cool, I always thought that was fascinating.
Raf_AL [OP] 1 points 5y ago
My classmates usually help me out, since i'm a very social guy and have just started to not care about asking people for help. One of my closest friends told me that it's good that i'm stubborn, but there's no shame in asking your classmates for help. I'm also visually impaired only, so I use some of my vision to navigate. I mostly use my cane to show others I'm visually impaired, unless I go to a place I haven't been to before.
Also nice that you think sound engineering is cool. You can send me a PM any time, if you'd like to know more about how things work for a visually impaired sound engineer.

You could place it in the corner nearest the doorway you are leaving, and then trail the walls to get back. This assumes you are staying inside.

It's more bulk that you want really, but I carry mine in my backpack on the train to and from work, and also there when I'm not using it (e.g. at home, at my desk at work). So you could have a light backpack to put it in. I like the idea of having some sort of cane holster/scabbard though. That'd be cool! It'd also be more useful when you were out for tea or drinks.
