slack taking steps to improve screen reader accessibility (self.Blind)
submitted by KrolPolski
I reached out to Slack to ask about screen reader access. Here was their response:

"Thanks for getting in touch. I'm a member of the Accessibility team here at Slack and I'll be happy to answer any questions you have.

Keyboard navigation and screen reading access has been our top priority in the past few months, and I am happy to say you should be able to use both the desktop and browser versions of Slack in a screen reader.

We've rolled out some changes in the past few weeks that makes improvements on this, and we are continuing to refine the interface.

Please let me know if you have a chance to use a screenreader on a Slack workspace. We are always interested in feedback.

Right now, we have Voiceover and Talkback available on various mobile platforms, and we have been testing screen reading on desktop and browser with Voiceover, NVDA, JAWS and other readers.

Again, thanks for writing in, and let me know if you have any questions."

I haven't gotten my JAWS license yet so I haven't tried it out, but I figured I would let you folks know that this might be getting better and it might be worth trying again to use Slack.

At least they responded to you. Slack's inaccessibility is a real shame as it's widely used in many offices, locking poeople out of essential work function.

I'm the Accessibility Product Manager at Slack. We have indeed been taking steps to improve Slack's accessibility, my worst nightmare as a PM is for people to not be able to perform in the workplace because of Slack.

For the last 6+ months or so we've been focusing almost exclusively on the screen reader experience. Tomorrow we're releasing a new round of improvements and we'll update this article with the details - $1. Oh, and we also got some JAWS licenses.

Please continue to send us feedback & especially criticism, all accessibility messages make it to the accessibility team (yes our Customer Experience is amazing) and I read & further triage the majority of them.

Also, please feel free to AMA

What trouble are you having with slack? I use slack quite a bit for work, and it works fine. I have no issues with it. Maybe I can help you out?

I'll have to try this. I'm a member of Slack, mostly for the public slack channels.

Maybe I don't use it enough but I've been using Slack for a few weeks on the latest version of iOS and I haven't encountered any hurdles

At least they have an IRC gateway. That already puts them miles ahead of almost every other service.
